E-procurement
This refers to procurement via electronic media such as the Internet or other computer networks etc. The objective of e-procurement systems.
Easter Egg
An Easter egg is an unanticipated surprise which is hidden in a Web site or an application program. Easter eggs often appear as messages, images, or sounds.
Edge router
Edge routers are switching computers located at the edges of a large network. They collect the data traffic generated by the customers of a network operator, concentrate it, and forward it to core routers. Today, edge routers are frequently used for subscriber broadband access with ADSL technology. The switching computer accepts the incoming ADSL connections, concentrates the data received, and forwards it to the core routers. An edge router can also read the data formats and protocols used in local company networks, and send them over the WAN.

EDI
Electronic Data Interchange: This standard allows the transfer of e.g. orders between companies.
EFF
Electronic Frontier Foundation - The chief organization for preserving civil liberties on the Internet. Founded in 1990, the EFF examines issues such as free speech, encryption, privacy, and intellectual property, and lobbies for them.
EFS
Encrypting File System - A feature of the Windows 2000 operating system that allows any file or folder to be stored in encrypted form and decrypted only by an individual user or an authorized recovery agent.
EGP
External Gateway Protocol - a protocol used to exchange routing information between the gateway hosts of two autonomous networks, each with its own router.
Electronic Commerce
Conducting business on-line. This includes, for example, buying and selling products with digital cash and via Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).
Electronic Mail - A free, quick and easy way to send messages via a computer network (i.e. the Internet) rather than through the postal service.
Encapsulation
(1) In programming, the process of combining elements to create a new entity, such as a procedure. (2) In networking, synonymous with tunneling.
Encryption
A change made to data, code, or a file so it no longer can be read or accessed without processing or decrypting. Roughly synonymous with encoding.
Enterprise Resource Planning
See ERP Software
ERP Software
Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERPs) integrate (or attempt to integrate) all data and processes of an organization into a single unified system. A typical ERP system will use multiple components of computer software and hardware to achieve the integration. A key ingredient of most ERP systems is the use of a single, unified database to store data for the various system modules. ERP systems typically attempt to cover all basic functions of an organization, regardless of the organization's business. These functions can range from Payroll and Accounting functions, to manufacturing, financials, supply chain and warehouse automation.
Ethernet
A very common method of networking computers in a LAN. Ethernet will handle about 10,000,000 bits-per-second and can be used with almost any kind of computer.
Ethernet Sniffer
A program, the goal of which is to log all activity over the local ethernet segment, as well as to intercept and view all packets on the network.
Ethernet Sniffing
The practice of listening with software to the Ethernet interface for packets that interest the user. When the software sees a packet that fits certain criteria, it logs it to a file. One such interesting packet might contain words like login or password.
ETSI
European Telecommunications Standards Institute: This European body develops and manages standards in the filed of telecommunications. ETSI is based in Sophia-Antipolis near Nice. Among other things, it is responsible for protocols and transmission methods.
Extranet
An extranet is a private network that uses Internet protocols, network connectivity, and possibly the public telecommunication system to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers or other businesses. Briefly, an extranet can be understood as "a private internet over the Internet". An argument has been made that "extranet" is just a buzzword for describing what institutions have been doing for decades, that is, interconnecting to each other to create private networks for sharing information. A very common use of the terms "Intranet" and "Extranet" is to designate the "private part" of a website, where "registered-on-site people" can navigate. The "login page" and the authentication mechanisms enable them. Generally in the sense that Intranet is for "employee exclusive contents", and Extranet for "customer/supplier exclusive contents".
