Founded in 1983, originally as a reseller agent for a large, now defunct, California based distributor of computer peripherals, Amdex had its roots in the Digital Equipment (DEC) marketplace.
Originally as a distributor / reseller of computer peripherals such as modems, terminals, printers, and other I/O boards, we grew our business selling such things as the then state-of-the-art 300bps modem, 300 line per minute band printer, VT100 emulating dumb terminals, and memory measured in 'kilobytes'.
In the mid 1980's we added PC products to our Data Center focus for the first time, but quickly found this was a cut-throat business more geared to the mass marketers than the 'Value Added Reseller'. By 1989 we had cut our ties to all PC products and started to expand our business in a new direction.
Many of our Data Center Customers started requesting help with their then legacy systems... 'PDP' and 'VAX' minicomputers from Digital Equipment. We promptly learned many other clients had this need and there was a robust growing secondary market for this gear.
Over the next 5 years we rapidly established ourselves as one of the leading stocking distributors of refurbished 'DEC' equipment. As our business grew, the industry continued its change as it marched forward. Compaq bought Dec, and HP bought Compaq. We adjusted in turn and began providing HP / Compaq products.
It was during this time that we added the resale of new equipment originally as an Authorized DEC partner, and today as an HP 'Gold' Enterprise partner as well as a Microsoft certified solution partner. These authorizations require technical competencies on the part of our engineers, and continued re-certification as new technologies emerge.
Simultaneously, the 'Data Center' became a multi-vendor environment. The days of DEC shops using DEC networking gear, and IBM shops using IBM networking gear came to an abrupt end, and new networking vendors such as Cisco, Extreme and Juniper emerged.
So in the early part of the 21st. century, we once again adapted, and added refurbished networking equipment as a core-competency. Another way we're 'Making IT Easy' for customers to work with us, in our continuing goal to focus on the data center.
